Tianeptine

[3-chloro-6-methyl-5,5-dioxo-6,11-dihydro-(c,f)-dibenzo-
(thiazepine)- 11-yl) amino]-7 heptanoic acid, sodium salt.

Tianeptine nay be regarded as a modified tricyclic antidepressant. Marketed as a racemate, the l-isomer is the more therapeutically active form. The primary metabolites of tianeptine have the same basic structure, minus two and four carbons respectively on the side chain.
